In this Jewish story not found in the Bible, Pharaoh puts his crown on the infant Moses who throws it off. This was seen as a sign that one day Moses would overthrow Pharaoh so he had to be tested to see whether he was really dangerous. He had to choose between a dish of cherries (or gold) and one with glowing pieces of coal. Moses chose the coal and put a piece in his mouth, burning himself. To Pharaoh this proved the childs innocence.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print titled "Moses being tested by the Pharaoh" takes us back to ancient times, immersing us in a Jewish story not found in the Bible. Painted by Giorgione, this oil on panel masterpiece measures 90x72 cm and is housed at the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, Italy. In this intriguing narrative, Pharaoh places his crown upon the infant Moses as a symbol of power. However, defying all expectations, young Moses defiantly throws off the crown. This act foreshadows his future role as an overthrower of Pharaoh's reign and prompts a test to determine whether he poses a genuine threat. To assess Moses' true nature, two dishes are presented before him: one filled with luscious cherries (or gold) and another containing glowing pieces of coal. In an unexpected turn of events, Moses selects the coal and bravely puts it into his mouth – burning himself but proving his innocence to Pharaoh. This remarkable painting serves as a companion piece to Judgement of Solomon and showcases Giorgione's mastery in capturing both human emotions and breathtaking landscapes. Through vivid brushstrokes and meticulous attention to detail, he transports viewers into this mythological realm where legend intertwines with reality.
