Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Wool" is part of the series Buy New Zealand Produce by Frank Newbould. Displayed at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this color lithograph showcases a stunning depiction of wool production. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by St. Michael's Press Ltd for HMSO, this artwork holds historical significance. The Empire Marketing Board was established to promote sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain and its colonies during 1926-1933. Manchester Art Gallery houses an intriguing collection of artist-designed posters from this campaign period. With over 200 acquired posters, they offer a glimpse into the EMB's efforts to shape Britons into conscious consumers supporting their empire. The poster campaign aimed to highlight various aspects of the empire, including its people, places, and products through powerful imagery like that seen in "Wool". However, it is important to note that these images can also raise uncomfortable questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. As we admire this print today, it serves as a reminder not only of Newbould's artistic talent but also prompts us to reflect on our complex relationship with history and how it continues to influence our present-day perspectives.
