Pavlova toured Europe in 1907, appeared briefly with the Ballets Russes of the Russian impresario Sergey Diaghilev and, in 1910 made her American debut with the Russian dancer Mikhail Mordkin at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. She founded her own company in 1911, and until 1931, when she died of pneumonia while on tour, she danced extensively in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, often bringing ballet for the first time to remote areas. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Anna Pavlova, the renowned Russian ballerina of the 1910s. With her delicate frame and graceful movements, Pavlova was hailed as the most famous classical ballerina of her time. Trained at the prestigious Imperial Ballet school, she quickly rose to prominence, becoming prima ballerina in 1906. In 1910, Pavlova made her American debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City alongside Mikhail Mordkin. Inspired by her success, she founded her own company in 1911 and embarked on a remarkable journey that took ballet to remote corners of Europe, Americas, Africa, and Asia. Pavlova's repertoire included iconic roles such as Giselle, Swan Lake, Les Sylphides, Don Quixote, and Coppelia. However it was The Dying Swan solo dance that truly showcased her artistry; a piece created specifically for her by choreographer Michel Fokine in 1905. With supple toes delicately balanced on tiptoe and dressed in an elegant costume adorned with feathers reminiscent of a swan's gracefulness, Pavlova mesmerized audiences worldwide. Her performances brought beauty and culture to places where ballet had never been seen before. Sadly, pneumonia claimed Pavlova's life while she was still touring in 1931, buther legacy lives on through this stunning photograph which is partofa private collection.
