Babylonian story of the flood on a clay tablet, probably from Sippor, Old Babylonian, 1635BC

Babylonian story of the flood on a clay tablet, probably from Sippor, Old Babylonian, 1635BC. This is one of three tablets which contained the Epic of Ammisaduqa, hero of the Babylonian flood story. It tells how the gods arranged for a flood to drown the world; the god of wisdom, Enki, warned his devotee Atrahasis of what was to happen, thereby enabling him to prepare a boat, in which he, his household and his animals were saved. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable artifact from ancient Babylonian civilization. Dating back to 1635BC, this clay tablet is believed to originate from Sippor and is one of three tablets containing the Epic of Ammisaduqa, the hero of the famous Babylonian flood story. The tablet depicts an enthralling narrative where gods conspire to unleash a catastrophic flood upon the world. However, Enki, the god of wisdom, shows compassion for his devotee Atrahasis by warning him about the impending disaster. This divine intervention enables Atrahasis to construct a boat in preparation for the deluge. Miraculously, he manages to save himself, his household, and even some animals on this vessel. As we gaze upon this relic housed within the prestigious British Museum's collection, we are transported back in time to witness humanity's enduring fascination with tales of survival against all odds. The vibrant colors on this clay tablet bring life to an ancient metaphorical account that has captivated generations across millennia. This artifact not only serves as a testament to Babylonian religious beliefs but also highlights their profound understanding and respect for nature's forces. It reminds us that throughout history and across cultures, stories have been passed down through generations as cautionary reminders or symbols of hope. Let us marvel at this extraordinary piece from Babylonia - a window into our collective past and a reminder that human resilience has always prevailed amidst adversity.
