Bust of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, 18th century(?)
Bust of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, 18th century(?). Catherine the Great (1729-1796) came to the throne in 1762. A German princess, she was chosen at the age of 14 to be the wife of Peter III of Russia. The marriage was a failure and Catherine conspired with a group of nobles including her lover, Count Orlov, to depose the Tsar, with Catherine ruling in his stead. Her reign saw Russia take an increasing role in European affairs and expand its empire with the addition of the Crimea and much of Poland. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Bust of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, believed to be from the 18th century. Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, ascended to power in 1762 after a tumultuous marriage with Peter III. Hailing from Germany and only 14 years old at the time of her selection as Peter's wife, their union proved unsuccessful. Seizing an opportunity with support from Count Orlov and other nobles, Catherine orchestrated a coup d'état that led to her ruling over Russia. During her reign, which lasted until her death in 1796, Catherine played a significant role in European affairs and expanded Russia's empire by acquiring territories such as Crimea and parts of Poland. This remarkable bust is housed within The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg. The sculpture captures both the regal presence and powerful aura associated with this influential monarch. Crafted out of marble by von Anholt Zerbst, it portrays Catherine II with great attention to detail—her head held high and shoulders squared—a symbol of strength and authority. As we gaze upon this stunning artwork, we are transported back to the grandeur of eighteenth-century Russia under the rule of one exceptional woman who left an indelible mark on history.
