John Augustus Roebling, American civil engineer, 1874
John Augustus Roebling, American civil engineer, 1874. Roebling (1806-1869) designed the Brooklyn Suspension Bridge as well as the Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Niagara Falls Bridges. The Brooklyn Bridge, spanning the East River in New York, was heralded as one of the most important construction projects of the 19th century. When completed in 1883 it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Roebling died of tetanus in 1869 after his foot was crushed in an accident during construction. His son, Washington, took over as chief engineer, and saw the project to its successful conclusion with the assistance of his wife Emily after Washington himself was incapacitated by an attack of the bends suffered while working below the river bed. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases John Augustus Roebling, an esteemed American civil engineer, in 1874. Known for his remarkable contributions to the field of engineering, Roebling designed several iconic bridges including the Brooklyn Suspension Bridge, Cincinnati Bridge, Pittsburgh Bridge, and Niagara Falls Bridges. The Brooklyn Bridge specifically stands as a testament to his genius and is hailed as one of the most significant construction projects of the 19th century. Tragically, Roebling's life was cut short when he succumbed to tetanus in 1869 after a devastating accident during bridge construction that crushed his foot. However, his legacy lived on through his son Washington who took over as chief engineer and successfully completed the Brooklyn Bridge with assistance from his wife Emily. Even Washington faced adversity when he suffered from decompression sickness while working below the river bed but persevered nonetheless. The engraving captures John Augustus Roebling's dignified portrait against a Victorian backdrop. It symbolizes not only his immense contribution to civil engineering but also highlights the determination and resilience displayed by both father and son throughout their careers. This historic photograph serves as a reminder of how individuals like John Augustus Roebling shaped America's landscape through their ingenuity and unwavering dedication.
