EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent organ of Hexham Abbey in Northumberland, taken by the talented photographer Peter Thompson in 2010. The abbey itself has a rich history, originally founded as a Benedictine Monastery in the 7th century before being replaced by an Augustinian priory during Norman times. The church's architecture predominantly dates back to this period between 1170 and 1250. Despite facing closure during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, Hexham Abbey managed to survive and became Hexham's parish church. In 1974, an extraordinary organ was installed within its walls, crafted by Lawrence Phelps from Pennsylvania. The photograph beautifully captures both the grandeur of the instrument and its surroundings. The early English Gothic style of the building is evident with its intricate details and arches that transport us back to medieval times. The vibrant colors bring life to every corner of this sacred space. Peter Thompson's skillful composition allows us to appreciate not only the architectural beauty but also highlights how music plays an integral role within religious practices. This image serves as a reminder of our shared cultural heritage across continents – showcasing American craftsmanship within a British historical setting. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are transported through time and space – immersed in centuries-old traditions while appreciating contemporary artistry. It is a testament to both human creativity and resilience that such treasures continue to be cherished today.
