Invested with almost dictatorial power, the committee was tasked with maintaining order and ensuring the safety of the French people. However, as the Revolution took a darker turn, the committee became an instrument of terror in the hands of its most extreme members, such as Maximilien Robespierre and Georges Danton. The events of April 1793 marked a turning point in the French Revolution.
