1466 1536 1584 Desiderius Erasmus Humanist Thevet Trimming
EDITORS COMMENTS
This image captures Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536), the renowned Dutch humanist and scholar, in a portrait painted around 1584 by an unknown artist. Erasmus, whose given name was Desiderius, was a central figure in the European intellectual world during the Renaissance. He is best known for his advocacy of the study of the original texts of the ancient Greeks and Romans, and for his biting satire, which influenced writers such as Voltaire and Jonathan Swift. In this portrait, Erasmus is depicted wearing a fur-trimmed hat, a sign of his status as a learned man. The book he holds in his left hand, open on his lap, is a testament to his dedication to scholarship. The title page of the book, which is visible, reveals it to be "Adagia," a collection of proverbs and witty sayings that Erasmus compiled from various sources. Accompanying Erasmus in the portrait is the French explorer and cartographer Andre Thevet (1502-1590). Thevet, who was a contemporary of Erasmus, was known for his extensive travels and his contributions to the field of cartography. He is shown here in the act of trimming a map, a task that would have been essential for the production of accurate and detailed maps during this period. The presence of Thevet in the portrait underscores the interconnectedness of the intellectual and exploratory worlds of the late 16th century. Both Erasmus and Thevet were driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to expand the boundaries of human understanding. This striking image, with its rich symbolism and intriguing juxtaposition of two influential figures, offers a glimpse into the intellectual and cultural milieu of the European Renaissance.
