EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration showcases three beautiful and historically significant roses: Hemp-leaved rose (Rosa cannabina), Lustre de Guesle (Rosa gallica 'Lustre de Guesle'), and Lustre de l'Evêque (Rosa gallica 'Lustre d'Evêque'). The illustration is taken from Charles Malos' "Histoire des Roses," published in Paris in 1818. The work was created by the skilled hands of Pancrace Bessa, who executed the initial hand-painted design, and Teillard, who added the intricate stipple engraving. The Hemp-leaved rose, also known as the Dog Rose or Wild Rose, is a native European species, easily identified by its prickly stems and hemp-like leaves. This hardy and versatile rose is often found growing in the wild and is known for its fragrant white or pink flowers and bright red hips. The Lustre de Guesle and Lustre de l'Evêque are both varieties of the Damask rose (Rosa gallica), which is native to the eastern Mediterranean region. These roses are prized for their rich, intoxicating fragrance and their velvety, dark red flowers. The Lustre de Guesle, also known as the Red Chequers, is named for its distinctive red and white striped petals, while the Lustre de l'Evêque, or Bishop's Lustre, features a solid, deep red color. This stunning illustration serves as a testament to the beauty and historical significance of these roses, which have captivated gardeners and botanists for centuries. The intricate details of the hand-painted design and the meticulous stipple engraving bring the delicate petals, vibrant colors, and prickly stems to life, making it a must-have for any botanical art collection.
