1780s 1787 Bankes Biblical Genesis Governor Honour Honoured Order Pharaoh Promoted Promotion Testament
EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 18th-century print from the Thomas Bankes Bible depicts the moment when Joseph, the favored son of Jacob, is promoted to the position of Governor of Egypt by Pharaoh, the King. The scene is taken from the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible, and is described in Chapter 41, Verse 43: "And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or put it down any thing in all the land of Egypt." Joseph, dressed in the regal robes and headdress of an Egyptian ruler, stands before Pharaoh, who sits upon his ornate throne. The King extends his hand in a gesture of bestowal, while Joseph humbly bows before him in acceptance of his new role. The Egyptian courtiers and officials look on in awe, their expressions reflecting a mixture of admiration and surprise. The intricate details of the print, from the ornate patterns on the throne and the rich fabrics of the robes, to the delicate lines of Joseph's facial features and the lifelike quality of the figures, are a testament to the skill of the engraver. The print, which dates from 1787, is a beautiful example of the high-quality illustrations that were produced during the 1780s, and serves as a reminder of the enduring power and influence of the Bible as a work of art and literature. The promotion of Joseph to the position of Governor of Egypt is a pivotal moment in the story of his life, and marks the beginning of his rise to power and prosperity. It also sets the stage for the events that will follow, including the famine that will afflict Egypt and the reunion of Joseph with his father Jacob and his brothers. This print captures the drama and excitement of that moment in history, and invites us to reflect on the themes of power, honor, and redemption that are so central to the story of Joseph and his family.
