EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Pedro Velarde Santillan (1779-1808), a brave and heroic figure in Spanish history. Born in the Cantabrian region of Spain, Velarde joined the Spanish Army as an artillery officer, rising through the ranks to become a captain. His military career was marked by his unwavering loyalty to his country and his valiant defense against foreign invaders. The year 1808 marked a turning point in Spanish history, as the French army of Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain, marking the beginning of the Peninsular War (1808-1814). Velarde, a defender of Spanish sovereignty, played a pivotal role in the Battle of May 2nd, which took place in the town of Alcolea de Caldas, near Madrid. During this battle, Velarde and his men successfully repelled the French advance, buying precious time for the Spanish forces to regroup and prepare for future engagements. Velarde's heroic actions did not go unnoticed, and he quickly gained the admiration and respect of his fellow Spaniards. However, his bravery ultimately led to his demise. In the Battle of Villagarcia, Velarde was mortally wounded while leading his troops against the French. His sacrifice was not in vain, as the Spanish forces emerged victorious, and Velarde became a martyr and a symbol of resistance against foreign occupation. Today, Velarde's legacy lives on, and he is remembered as one of the most popular heroes of the War of Spanish Independence. This beautifully colored engraving, created in the 19th century, captures the essence of Velarde's military prowess and unwavering dedication to his country. The image shows Velarde in his military uniform, complete with a mustache and sideburns that were popular during the Napoleonic Wars. This evocative portrait is a testament to Velarde's heroic past and his enduring place in Spanish history. It can be found in various museums and houses dedicated to Spanish military history, including the Museum of the Spanish Army in Madrid.
