Dame Mary Bailey, Lady Bailey, DBE (nee Westenra) (1890-1960), Irish aviator, trying the controls in preparation for her flight in the Zogling primary glider near Wendover in Buckinghamshire. In the foreground can beseen the bungee cord used for delivering the initial urge, with the hold-back crew sat beneath the tailplane, to hold the glider back until sufficient tension is applied to the bungee. The Zogling was built in Germany by the "Kegel-Flugzeugbau Kassel", with the company's distinctive logo on the King-post. Photograph date - 6 April 1930

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the pioneering spirit of Lady Bailey as she prepares for her historic flight in the Zogling glider. Dame Mary Bailey, known for her fearless and trailblazing approach to aviation, can be seen here familiarizing herself with the controls of the primary glider before taking to the skies near Wendover in Buckinghamshire.
In this moment frozen in time on April 6, 1930, Lady Bailey is on the brink of making history as the first woman to pilot a glider. The bungee cord visible in the foreground serves as a reminder of the initial urge needed to propel her into flight, while the hold-back crew beneath the tailplane stand ready to release her once enough tension is applied.
The Zogling glider itself was a marvel built by "Kegel-Flugzeugbau Kassel" in Germany, with their distinctive logo proudly displayed on its King-post. This aircraft would soon carry Lady Bailey into uncharted territory and solidify her legacy as an aviatrix who fearlessly pushed boundaries and shattered glass ceilings.
As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we are reminded of Lady Bailey's courage and determination that paved the way for future generations of female aviators. Her passion for flight transcends time and continues to inspire all who dare to dream of soaring through the skies.
