EDITORS COMMENTS
Wamba (590-687): A Visionary Monarch of the Visigothic Kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula This engraving captures the likeness of Wamba, the illustrious King of the Visigoths, who ruled from 672 to 680. During his reign, the Visigothic kingdom extended its borders to encompass all of Hispania and part of southern Gaul, known as Septimania. The portrait portrays Wamba as a regal and determined monarch, dressed in the traditional attire of the time, adorned with a crown and a mantle. Wamba's reign was marked by significant events in the history of the Iberian Peninsula. In 675, he convened the Seventh Council of Toledo, which established the first official liturgy for the Visigothic Church. The council also decreed that the Visigothic language should be used in religious services, further solidifying the use of the Romance language in the region. Moreover, Wamba's reign saw the expansion of Visigothic influence into the south of Gaul, which was a strategic move to protect the kingdom from external threats. However, his reign was not without challenges. In 680, Wamba was assassinated, marking the end of the Visigothic monarchy in Spain. Despite his untimely demise, Wamba's legacy endured. His reign marked the height of Visigothic power and influence in the Iberian Peninsula, and his efforts to strengthen the Visigothic Church laid the foundation for the emergence of the Roman Catholic Church in the region. This engraving serves as a testament to Wamba's visionary leadership and his significant contributions to the history of Europe during the Middle Ages.
