World War II: Women. Six hundred Polish women have arrived in this country having spent
World War II: Women. Six hundred Polish women have arrived in this country having spent much of their time in Russia, Persia, and Africa after escaping from Poland to join the WaF. Mothers and daughters together are all keen to serve in this country. Some have spent years in Russia, in Siberia, where they were cutting wood until they were released. Many have harrowing tales to tell and many have fathers and husbands to find in this country or serving with the Polish forces. One Polish airman came to this seaside resort on the off chance and found his wife and daughter whom he had not seen since he left Poland when it was overrun by the Germans. Many of them have to be taught Polish, being peasants they have to be taught to read and write altho they can speak it. Few can speak English. Corporal of the WaF teaches the salute to some of the new recruits. Front line of the recruits, left to right, are two daughters and there two mothers Marysia Czeremkiewicz, Halina Wozniczka, her mother Jozefa and Wanda Czeremkiewicz. April 1944 P010243

EDITORS COMMENTS
World War II: Women. A testament of resilience and determination, this print captures the arrival of six hundred Polish women in a foreign land after enduring unimaginable hardships during World War II. Escaping from Poland to join the WaF, these brave souls spent years in Russia, Persia, and Africa before finally finding refuge here. Mothers and daughters stand side by side, their unwavering commitment to serve evident in their eyes. For many, this reunion marks the first time they have seen each other since fleeing Poland when it fell under German occupation. The emotional embrace between a Polish airman and his wife and daughter is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by these families. Harrowing tales echo through their words as they recount experiences of cutting wood in Siberia or searching for loved ones lost amidst chaos. As peasants with limited education, some must learn to read and write Polish while others struggle to communicate in English. In this heartwarming scene captured on film, a Corporal of the WaF patiently teaches new recruits how to salute—a symbol of unity among these courageous women who are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead. This print from April 1944 serves as an important historical artifact—an homage to the strength and resilience displayed by these remarkable individuals who left everything behind for freedom.
