EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1970s, capturing one of Newcastle's most visually stunning classical buildings - the savings bank of Grainger Street and Westgate Road. The elegant 19th-century structure stands proudly as the headquarters of the Northumberland and Durham Trustee Savings Bank, exuding a timeless charm that has captivated passersby for generations. However, this architectural gem faces an uncertain future due to the Tyneside Metropolitan Railway Bill. Presented at the banks' annual meeting in Newcastle by chairman Mr H. Peter Bell, it is revealed that if passed in its current form, this bill would grant power to the Tyneside Passenger Transport Executive to compulsorily purchase not only this magnificent building but also its Gateshead premises. The potential loss of such a historically significant landmark sends ripples through both business and cultural communities alike. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of how vital it is to preserve our architectural heritage amidst ever-changing urban landscapes. Intriguingly captured by NCJ Staff from Memory Lane Prints, this image serves as a poignant reminder of how economic progress can sometimes come at odds with preserving our rich history. Let us hope that efforts will be made to protect this cherished symbol of Newcastle's past for future generations to appreciate and admire.
