For the last few weeks at the St Lukes Primary School, Manchester
For the last few weeks at the St Lukes Primary School, Manchester, Greater Manchester have been putting away threepence a week to go on a picnic with a difference, for this is a picnic in the snow. These kiddies never see proper snow because it soon gets dirty in the centre of the city, so the headmistress Miss Ethel Parkinson decided to organise this trip for them. 17th January 1959

EDITORS COMMENTS
For the last few weeks, the students of St. Lukes Primary School in Manchester have been eagerly saving up their threepence coins for a unique and exciting adventure - a picnic in the snow! In bustling Greater Manchester, it's rare for these little ones to witness proper snowfall as it quickly turns dirty amidst city life. Determined to create a magical experience, Headmistress Miss Ethel Parkinson took charge and organized this special outing. On January 17th, 1959, with anticipation bubbling in the crisp winter air, these children embarked on their snowy escapade. The print captures their joyous faces as they frolic through glistening white landscapes that seem straight out of a storybook. Each child is bundled up snugly against the cold weather while clutching homemade sandwiches and thermoses filled with warm cocoa. This snapshot from the 1950s transports us back to an era where simple pleasures like playing in freshly fallen snow brought immeasurable delight. It serves as a reminder of how even small acts of kindness can create lasting memories for young hearts. Geoff Thomas' photograph encapsulates not only the innocence and wonderment of childhood but also highlights the efforts made by dedicated educators like Miss Parkinson who go above and beyond to provide enriching experiences for their students. As we gaze upon this charming scene frozen in time, let us cherish those precious moments when nature's beauty intertwines with youthful exuberance.
