EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Knaresborough: Then and Now" takes us back to the 1930s, when rail travel was at its peak. Produced by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER), this poster aimed to entice travelers to visit Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. The artwork, skillfully created by Andrew Johnson, beautifully contrasts two scenes of Mother Shiptons Cave. The first scene depicts a moment from 1486, representing "then". In this mystical setting, we see Mother Shipton herself riding into her cave on a goat. Known as a famous prophetess, she holds an air of mystery and intrigue that captivates our imagination. In contrast, the second scene represents "now" showcasing how times have changed. An elegantly dressed tourist stands outside the entrance of the cave, symbolizing modern-day exploration and curiosity. This transformation highlights not only the historical significance of Knaresborough but also its appeal as a contemporary tourist destination. This print reminds us of the rich history embedded within Knaresborough's landscapes and legends. It invites us to embark on a journey through time while marveling at both past prophecies and present-day wonders. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of art from the National Railway Museum collection, we are transported to an era where rail travel opened doors to new adventures and discoveries
