EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 1920s, when rail travel was at its peak and Stratford-upon-Avon was a must-visit destination for tourists. Produced by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), this poster aimed to entice travelers to explore the charming town of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. The artwork, skillfully created by Warwick Goble, showcases his talent as both an illustrator and lithographer. Having studied at Westminster School of Art, Goble's expertise shines through in this stunning piece. His work has been exhibited at prestigious galleries such as the Royal Academy. Stratford-upon-Avon holds immense historical significance as it is renowned as the birthplace of one of England's greatest playwrights - William Shakespeare. With its rich cultural heritage and picturesque landscapes, it comes as no surprise that LMS extensively promoted this enchanting town to American visitors during that era. In addition to promoting Stratford-upon-Avon itself, this poster also highlights another gem - The LMS Welcombe Hotel. Described as England's newest country house hotel, it offered luxurious accommodations amidst breathtaking surroundings. This print not only captures a moment in time but also represents an era when rail travel played a vital role in connecting people with remarkable destinations like Stratford-upon-Avon. It serves as a reminder of how artful posters were used to ignite wanderlust and encourage exploration during those golden years of railway tourism.
