Desert locust and millet plant
African desert locust (Schistotecera gregaria) on Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum), artwork. The desert locust is a significant agricultural pest in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The life cycle (clockwise from lower left) begins with the female laying her eggs in the ground, below a foam plug. The eggs hatch into solitary green nymphs, which go through 5 growth stages (instars) before moulting into its solitary adult form. The offspring of this generation of locusts are much brighter in colour and form swarms of " hoppers". After 5 instars these moult into their adult form

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the intricate relationship between the African desert locust and the Proso millet plant. The image showcases the life cycle of this notorious agricultural pest, which wreaks havoc on crops in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Starting from the lower left corner and moving clockwise, we witness each stage of their fascinating journey. The female desert locust lays her eggs beneath a foam plug in the ground, setting off a chain reaction that will ultimately lead to swarms of destructive hoppers. As these eggs hatch into solitary green nymphs, they undergo five growth stages before transforming into their adult form. Interestingly, this generation's offspring exhibit brighter colors as they band together to form menacing swarms. The delicate illustration not only highlights the biology and pathology of these pests but also emphasizes their economic impact on agriculture. With precision and attention to detail, it serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to understand and manage such biological threats. Through this mesmerizing piece of art by Science Photo Library, we are transported into an intricate world where nature's balance teeters on a fine line between survival for some species and devastation for others. It stands as a testament to both the beauty and fragility found within our natural ecosystems.
