Unveiling of the World War 2 memorial at Paddington Station, 1949

On the 11th November 1949 the war memorial at Paddington which was erected following the First World War, was again the focus of a moving ceremony when a new plaque was unveiled by former GWR General Manager Sir James Milne, which rededicated the memorial to include the Great Western men and women who fought and died in World War II. A casket was sealed within the memorial, alongside the one that was placed there in 1922, containing a roll of honour that listed the names of the 794 employees who gave their lives in the Second World War

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photo print, we witness the solemn moment of the unveiling of the World War 2 memorial at Paddington Station in 1949. The war memorial, originally erected after the First World War, became a focal point once again as it was rededicated to honor the brave men and women from Great Western who fought and sacrificed their lives during World War II. Former GWR General Manager Sir James Milne stands proudly before the monument, his hand poised to reveal a new plaque that would forever commemorate those fallen heroes. The atmosphere is heavy with emotion as onlookers gather around, paying their respects to these courageous individuals. The memorial itself stands tall and majestic against the backdrop of London's bustling Paddington Station. Its grandeur serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless soldiers who selflessly served their country. Two caskets are sealed within its structure; one placed there in 1922 after WWI and another added now containing a roll of honour listing all 794 employees who gave their lives during WWII. This photograph captures not only a historic moment but also encapsulates an enduring symbol of remembrance for generations to come. It reminds us that even amidst bustling train platforms and busy city life, we must never forget those who laid down their lives for our freedom.
