A female Grey Seal gets close to her pup on a beach on the north Sea island of Helgoland, Germany, on December 14, 2016.
As the mating season starts after female Grey Seals give birth, males usually compete by shows of strength against other males. Hundreds of Grey Seals use the island to give birth to their pups, usually between the months of November and January. The pups, after 3 weeks of nursing, are then left to fend for themselves. This year has seen a record number of new pups, with 320 births recorded up to December 14. / AFP PHOTO / John MACDOUGALL

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print captured by John MACDOUGALL, we witness a heartwarming moment between a female Grey Seal and her pup on the picturesque beach of Helgoland, Germany. The bond between mother and child is beautifully portrayed as the seal affectionately gets close to her little one. As the mating season commences for Grey Seals after giving birth, males engage in fierce displays of strength to compete against each other. This natural phenomenon takes place on the island where hundreds of these magnificent creatures choose to give birth to their pups annually, typically from November through January. The image also sheds light on an interesting aspect of seal life - after three weeks of nursing, the mothers leave their young ones to fend for themselves. It is truly remarkable how these adorable pups learn survival skills at such an early stage in life. This year has been particularly special as it witnessed a record number of new births with 320 recorded up until December 14th. Such news brings hope for the conservation efforts aimed at protecting these precious marine mammals. Through this photograph, AFP photographer John MACDOUGALL successfully captures both the beauty and vulnerability that exist within our animal kingdom. It serves as a reminder that we must continue working towards preserving our environment and ensuring a safe future for all species inhabiting our planet.
