Haiti-Festival-Carnival

A reveler wearing a costume performs during the 2017 National Carnival Parade on February 26, 2017, in the city of Les Cayes, southwest Haiti.
The name of the carnival for this year is " Tet ansanb pou gran sid leve kanpe", in Haitian creole, (together for the South to rise up).
Last year 546 people died and more than 175, 000 people lost their homes when Hurricane Matthew roared ashore on October 4, packing 230-kilometer-per-hour winds in Haiti. Food, medicine and other essential aids took time to reach the areas struck by Hurricane Matthew. / AFP PHOTO / HECTOR RETAMAL

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the vibrant spirit of Haiti's National Carnival Parade in Les Cayes. Amidst a sea of revelers, a performer adorned in an elaborate costume takes center stage, exuding energy and joy. The carnival's theme for that year, "Tet ansanb pou gran sid leve kanpe" meaning "together for the South to rise up" in Haitian Creole, resonates deeply with the community. The significance of this celebration is heightened by the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Matthew just months prior. In October 2016, Haiti was ravaged by this powerful storm, resulting in immense loss and destruction. Over 546 lives were tragically lost, while more than 175,000 people were left homeless. The road to recovery was arduous as essential aid struggled to reach those affected. However, amidst adversity and hardship, the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Haitian people shine through during their annual carnival festivities. This image encapsulates their determination to rebuild and move forward together as a united community. Photographed by Hector Retamal from Agence France-Presse (AFP), this horizontal close-up shot allows us to immerse ourselves in the vibrant colors and intricate details of both the performer's costume and surrounding parade atmosphere. It serves as a poignant reminder that even in times of darkness, unity and celebration can bring hope and healing to communities facing unimaginable challenges.
