EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of French composer Olivier Messiaen's secondary residence, located on the serene shores of Laffrey lake in Saint-Theoffrey. Taken on June 23,2016, the image showcases a grand piano nestled within the walls of this historic house. This picturesque abode is set to be transformed into a haven for artists, aptly named "Little Villa Medici of the Alps" capable of accommodating up to five residents at a time. The realization of Messiaen's testamentary vow is beautifully depicted here; he had longed for his beloved home, where he composed most of his renowned repertoire and now rests in peace nearby, to become a sanctuary that cultivates and preserves the memory of his extraordinary work. The significance and reverence attached to this space are palpable through every corner captured by photographer Jean-Pierre Clatot from Agence France-Presse (AFP). With its architectural charm and idyllic surroundings, this photograph transports viewers into an artistic realm where creativity thrives amidst nature's tranquility. It serves as a poignant reminder that even after an artist has departed from this world, their legacy lives on through spaces like these – sanctuaries that inspire future generations to create masterpieces akin to those born within these very walls.
