Sandra, a 29-year-old orangutan, is pictured at Buenos Aires zoo, on December 22, 2014. Sandra got cleared to leave a Buenos Aires zoo she has called home for 20 years, after a court ruled she was entitled to more desirable living conditions. Argentinas Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) filed a " habeas corpus" writ -- a form of legal redress against unlawful imprisonment -- arguing she was " suffering an unwarranted confinement." The AFADA is in the process of securing Sandras release to transfer her to a sanctuary where she is expected to live a more comfortable and happy life, lawyers said. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo captures the bittersweet moment of Sandra, a 29-year-old orangutan, at Buenos Aires zoo. After two decades of calling this place home, Sandra has finally been granted the opportunity to leave and seek better living conditions. The Argentinas Association of Professional Lawyers for Animal Rights (AFADA) fought tirelessly on her behalf, filing a "habeas corpus" writ to challenge her unlawful imprisonment. The image showcases Sandra's wise and soulful eyes as she gazes into the distance, perhaps contemplating her future in a world beyond these confines. Her expression seems to convey both relief and anticipation as she prepares herself for an entirely new chapter in life. Thanks to AFADA's efforts, Sandra is now on the path towards freedom. The association is diligently working towards securing her release and transferring her to a sanctuary where she can experience comfort and happiness that was long overdue. Juan Mabromata skillfully captured this poignant moment with his camera lens. Through his photography, he brings attention not only to Sandra's plight but also highlights the ongoing struggle for animal rights around the world. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder that every creature deserves dignity and respect. It symbolizes hope for change while shedding light on our collective responsibility to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.
