Files-Space-Us-History of Manned Space Flight-Apollo

(FILES) Astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr. lunar module pilot of the first lunar landing mission, poses for a photograph beside the deployed United States flag during Apollo 11 Extravehicular Activity (EVA) on the lunar surface area called the Sea of Tranquility in this 20 July 1969 file photo. The Lunar Module (LM) is on the left, and the footprints of the astronauts are clearly visible in the soil of the Moon. Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, commander, took this picture with a 70mm Hasselblad lunar surface camera. While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the LM the " Eagle" to explore the Sea of Tranquility region of the Moon, astronaut Michael Collins, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Modules (CSM) " Columbia" in lunar-orbit. The 38th anniversary of the landing is remembered on 20 July 2007. AFP PHOTO / NASA / AFP PHOTO / NASA / HO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment in the history of manned space flight. Taken on July 20,1969, during the Apollo 11 mission, it showcases astronaut Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. , lunar module pilot, posing beside the deployed United States flag on the lunar surface known as the Sea of Tranquility. The image also reveals the Lunar Module (LM) on the left and clearly visible footprints left by Armstrong and Aldrin. As Commander Neil A. Armstrong took this photograph using a Hasselblad lunar surface camera, his fellow astronauts embarked on their iconic exploration of the Moon's surface. While Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the LM named "Eagle". Michael Collins remained with the Command and Service Modules ("Columbia") in lunar orbit. The significance of this image lies not only in its visual impact but also in its representation of humanity's first steps onto another celestial body. It symbolizes mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and our ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. Now preserved as an invaluable piece of history, this print serves as a reminder that dreams can become reality through determination, teamwork, and unwavering ambition. On July 20th every year since that monumental day in 1969, we commemorate this extraordinary achievement that forever changed our understanding of what is possible beyond Earth's boundaries.
