Young surfer Rickson Falcao, 10, waits for a wave at Saquaremas beach in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, on November 29, 2017.
Despite its vast Atlantic coastline, Brazil has few areas with world class surf. Until recently, it also had too small a middle class to grow a sport that had few roots. One main hotspot has always been near Sao Paulo, the other is Saquarema, a sleepy seaside city famous for a beautiful church on a rocky promontory, dividing two long beaches -- each lashed by consistently good waves. At the core of that local culture is Luiz Augusto de Matos, a burly retired firefighter who opened the Saquarema Surf School in 1990 and dedicated himself to turning generations of skinny toddlers into wave wizards. Today he has 30 students. / AFP PHOTO / LEO CORREA / TO GO WITH AFP STORY by Sebastian Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Brazil's surf culture, as young surfer Rickson Falcao eagerly awaits a wave at Saquaremas beach in Rio de Janeiro state. Despite its extensive Atlantic coastline, Brazil has long struggled to establish itself as a world-class surfing destination due to limited resources and a small middle class. However, there are two main hotspots that have managed to attract surf enthusiasts over the years - one near Sao Paulo and the other being Saquarema. Saquarema is a tranquil coastal city renowned for its picturesque church perched on a rocky promontory, dividing two expansive beaches that consistently offer excellent waves. At the heart of this local surf culture lies Luiz Augusto de Matos, a retired firefighter with an unwavering passion for nurturing young talent. In 1990, he established the Saquarema Surf School and dedicated himself to transforming generations of slender toddlers into skilled wave riders. Today, under Matos' guidance and mentorship, his school boasts an impressive enrollment of 30 students who are eager to master their craft. This photograph serves as a testament not only to Rickson Falcao's anticipation but also to the enduring legacy of Matos' commitment towards shaping future generations of Brazilian surfers. Captured by AFP photographer Leo Correa, this image encapsulates both the beauty and determination found within Brazil's vibrant surfing community – showcasing how even in seemingly sleepy seaside towns like Saquarema, dreams can be realized through dedication and love for the sport
