SCIENCES 81628

An picture dated September 1949 of American nuclear scientist Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967) (R) with Italian born, American nuclear scientist Enrico Fermi (1901-1954). Robert Oppenheimer became director of the atom bomb project at Los Alamos (1943-45), chairman of the advisory committee to the US Atomic Energy Commission (1946-1952) and Director of the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1947). Opposing the hydrogen bomb project, in 1953 he was suspended from secret nuclear research as a security risk, but was awarded the Enrico Fermi Prize in 1963. Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) split a number of nuclei by bombardment with neutrons, for which he was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize for Physics. Fermi played a prominent role in atomic energy, and constructed the first US nuclear reactor (1942) as part of the atomic bomb project. The Enrico Fermi Award of the US Department of Energy is given in his honour. / AFP PHOTO

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of science. Dated September 1949, it showcases two brilliant minds who revolutionized nuclear physics - American scientist Robert Oppenheimer and Italian-born Enrico Fermi. Robert Oppenheimer, renowned for his pivotal role as the director of the atom bomb project at Los Alamos during World War II, is seen standing on the right side of the frame. His piercing gaze reflects both intelligence and determination. Opposing the hydrogen bomb project later in his career, he faced suspension from secret nuclear research due to perceived security risks but was still recognized with prestigious awards such as the Enrico Fermi Prize. On Oppenheimer's left stands Enrico Fermi, whose contributions to atomic energy were groundbreaking. A recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938, Fermi conducted experiments that involved splitting nuclei by neutron bombardment. Notably, he constructed America's first nuclear reactor as part of the atomic bomb project. The camaraderie between these two scientific giants is evident in their smiles and relaxed postures captured by this photograph. It symbolizes collaboration and shared passion for advancing knowledge in an era marked by intense scientific discoveries. This remarkable image serves as a testament to their enduring legacies within nuclear physics and highlights their invaluable contributions to shaping our understanding of atomic energy.
