EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Paul Kruger, the last President of the South African Republic and generally regarded as the greatest figure in Afrikanerdom, during his later years. Born on October 10, 1825, in the then Dutch colony of South Africa, Kruger rose to prominence as a leader of the Boer resistance against British encroachment on their lands. Known for his distinctive whiskers and the signature monocle in his right eye, Kruger gained the nickname 'Oom Paul' or 'Uncle Paul' among his people. The image of Kruger, taken in 1904, shows him as a gentleman of the Victorian era, dressed in a formal suit and holding a pocket watch. The haggard lines on his face and the intensity in his eyes reflect the challenges he faced during his long and tumultuous political career. As the leader of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal, Kruger played a significant role in the Second Boer War (1899-1902), which pitted the Boers against the British Empire. Despite the ultimate defeat of the Boers, Kruger's legacy as a symbol of Afrikaner resistance and national pride endured. This photograph is a testament to the historical significance of Paul Kruger and his role in shaping the political landscape of South Africa. His image continues to resonate with the Afrikaner community and remains an essential part of South African history.
