Orion nebula
Orion nebula. Coloured composite infrared and visible light image of the Orion nebula M42. This emission nebula, a cloud of gas and dust in which starbirth takes place, is found in the constellation Orion, some 1500 light years from Earth. Glowing clouds of ionised hydrogen and sulphur gases are green, and cool clouds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are orange and red. The gases are ionised by radiation from the four young Trapezium stars at the core (centre left). The small orange dots are embryonic stars, growing as they accumulate dust and gas. M42s neighbour, the M43 nebula, can also be seen (pale blue, top left). Infrared data from the Spitzer Space Telescope, visible light data from the Hubble Space Telescope

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Orion Nebula, also known as M42. Located approximately 1500 light years away from Earth in the constellation Orion, this emission nebula serves as a celestial nursery where new stars are born within its gas and dust clouds. The composite image combines both infrared and visible light data to showcase the various elements present in this cosmic cloud. The vibrant green hues represent ionized hydrogen and sulphur gases that emit a captivating glow. Meanwhile, cool clouds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) create stunning shades of orange and red throughout the nebula. At the core of this stellar formation lies four young Trapezium stars whose radiation ionizes these gases, adding to their ethereal appearance. Amongst these radiant colors, small orange dots can be observed - embryonic stars in their early stages of development as they accumulate dust and gas around them. Additionally, one can spot M42's neighboring nebula, M43, depicted with pale blue tones at the top left corner. Thanks to data collected by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope for infrared imaging and Hubble Space Telescope for visible light imaging, we are granted an awe-inspiring glimpse into this astronomical wonder. This print is a testament to our ongoing exploration of space and our ever-growing understanding of star birth processes within our vast universe.
