Electrical conduction in the heart, artwork
Electrical conduction in the heart, artwork. Each heartbeat is initiated by an electrical impulse from the sinoatrial (SA) node (green oval) in the right atrium (upper heart chamber). This impulse travels through the myocardium (muscle) of both atria to the atrioventricular (AV) node (purple oval). The impulse causes the myocardium to contract. At the AV node the impulse splits into two bundles, one that stimulates the left ventricle (lower chamber) and one that stimulates the right ventricle. At top is an electrocardiogram (ECG) trace, showing the P wave (green) as the atria contract and the QRS complex (purple) as the ventricles contract

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Electrical Conduction in the Heart" beautifully illustrates the intricate process behind each heartbeat. At the center of this masterpiece is the green oval representing the sinoatrial (SA) node, situated in the right atrium of our heart. It is from here that every heartbeat originates, as an electrical impulse triggers its contraction. The journey of this vital impulse can be seen through the myocardium (muscle) of both atria until it reaches the purple oval known as the atrioventricular (AV) node. As it travels, this impulse causes a synchronized contraction throughout these chambers. At this point, an incredible phenomenon occurs as the impulse splits into two bundles: one to stimulate and coordinate contractions in our left ventricle and another for our right ventricle. This harmonious coordination ensures efficient pumping action by our heart. Displayed above is an electrocardiogram (ECG) trace showcasing distinct waves. The green P wave represents atrial contraction while the purple QRS complex signifies ventricular contraction - essential components for a healthy cardiac rhythm. This mesmerizing artwork not only highlights how electrical conduction propels our hearts but also emphasizes its importance within our biological system. The illustration serves as a reminder of how intricately connected various anatomical structures are to maintain proper functioning within our bodies.
