There is evidence of Iron Age settlement in Edinburgh and the old part of the city developed around the castle within the protective Flodden Wall. The New Town was begun in 1767 to create space for the expanding population. The city hosts the Military tattoo and the Edinburgh Festival every year and is a popular tourist destination.
