Babylonian boundary-stone recording a gift of land
A Babylonian boundary stone (kudurru), Kassite dynasty, about 1125-1100 BC, probably from southern Iraq. The cuneiform inscription records the gift of land near Edina in South Babylonia to Gula-eresh by Eanna-shum-iddina, the Governor of the Sea-land (the Persian Gulf). The symbols of the gods on the stone represent the gods invoked to protect the deed, and a curse is made on any who break it. From the British Museums collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Babylonian boundary-stone, dating back to the Kassite dynasty around 1125-1100 BC. Originating from southern Iraq, this kudurru is believed to have been found near Edina in South Babylonia and holds great historical significance. The cuneiform inscription engraved on the stone documents a generous gift of land by Eanna-shum-iddina, the Governor of the Sea-land (the Persian Gulf), to Gula-eresh. What makes this artifact truly remarkable are the symbols of various gods adorning its surface. These divine figures were invoked as protectors of this important transaction, ensuring that any violation would be met with dire consequences. A powerful curse accompanies these symbols, serving as a stern warning against anyone who dares to break the agreement. Preserved within the esteemed collection of the British Museum, this photograph allows us to marvel at both its intricate details and rich cultural heritage. Its vibrant colors bring life to an ancient relic that has survived for over three millennia. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness an exchange between two individuals that held immense value in their society. It serves as a testament not only to their legal system but also highlights their deep spiritual beliefs and reverence for divine protection.
