EDITORS COMMENTS
Anne Henriette de France, the Twin Consorts: A Musical Bond (1727-1752) This image captures Anne Henriette de France, the eldest twin daughter of Louis, Duc de Bourbon, and Marie-Anne de Bourbon, in an intimate moment of leisurely enjoyment. Born on January 1, 1727, Anne Henriette and her sister, Louise Elisabeth, were raised in the French court and later became consorts to the Polish king, Stanisław Leszczyński, and the Danish king, Christian VI, respectively. In this scene, Anne Henriette is depicted playing the viola da gamba, a popular stringed instrument of the time, while her sister, Louise Elisabeth, plays the viol. The sisters' shared love for music is evident as they engage in a harmonious exchange, their faces expressing deep concentration and joy. The painting, created by renowned French artist Sabeth-Lisabeth Nattier, beautifully captures the bond between the twins and their shared passion for music. Anne Henriette's role as a queen consort began in 1747 when she married King Stanisław Leszczyński of Poland. Her marriage was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the French influence in Poland. Despite the political implications, Anne Henriette's love and devotion to her husband remained steadfast, and she is remembered for her grace, intelligence, and musical talents. Tragically, Anne Henriette's life was cut short when she passed away on February 27, 1752, at the young age of 25. The painting serves as a poignant reminder of her vibrant spirit and the profound connection she shared with her sister, Louise Elisabeth, who survived her by several decades.
