EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1849, capturing a moment in time at Swindon Works and Railway Village. Painted by Edward Snell, who held a prominent position as head draughtsman at the works, this early watercolour painting offers a glimpse into the birth of New Swindon. The image showcases an enchanting view towards the east of New Swindon, with rows upon rows of charming cottages lining the streets of the Railway Village. These humble abodes were home to countless workers who dedicated their lives to the bustling railway industry that thrived within these very walls. Intriguingly, on the opposite side of this idyllic village lies the imposing presence of Swindon Works itself. This grand industrial complex stands tall and proud, serving as a testament to human ingenuity and progress during that era. And finally, perched atop this picturesque scene is none other than The Station - a beacon of connectivity and adventure for those embarking on journeys far and wide. Edward Snell's masterful brushstrokes have expertly captured not only architectural details but also an entire way of life frozen in time. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from STEAM Museum's collection, we are transported back to an age where steam power reigned supreme and communities flourished around it
