EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the sleek and elegant Hawker Cygnet, registration number G-EBMB, taking to the skies in 1966. The Hawker Cygnet is a two-seat, single-engine, low-wing monoplane, designed and built by the Hawker Aircraft Company in the United Kingdom. Known for its distinctive curved wing design and streamlined fuselage, the Cygnet was originally conceived as a private venture for the personal use of Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, the founder of de Havilland Aircraft Company. The Cygnet's maiden flight took place on March 2, 1952, and it quickly gained a reputation for being a high-performance and agile aircraft. With a top speed of over 150 miles per hour and a range of around 800 miles, the Cygnet was an ideal choice for cross-country flights and air-to-air photography. In the photograph, we see G-EBMB soaring above the clouds, leaving a trail of vapor in its wake. The pilot, dressed in a flight suit and helmet, looks intently out of the cockpit, focused on the horizon. The engine, a de Havilland Gipsy Queen Mk. Major, can be seen at the rear of the fuselage, its exhausts producing a plume of smoke as it propels the aircraft forward. The Hawker Cygnet was a true aeronautical marvel of its time, and this photograph captures its grace and power in flight. With only 26 examples built, the Cygnet remains an elusive and coveted aircraft among aviation enthusiasts and collectors.
