EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Karl Lachmann (1793-1851), a renowned German scholar, philologist, and literary critic of the 19th century. Born in Schwerin, Mecklenburg, Lachmann studied theology and philosophy at the University of Halle before turning his attention to classical philology. He is best known for his groundbreaking work on the textual criticism of ancient Greek and Roman texts, particularly in the fields of Homeric and Virgilian studies. Lachmann's innovative approach to textual criticism, which emphasized the importance of comparing and collating multiple manuscripts to reconstruct the original text, revolutionized the field and is still used today. His seminal work, "De Homeri Iliadis Recensione," published in 1850, demonstrated the value of this method in the analysis of the Iliad. A prolific scholar, Lachmann also made significant contributions to the study of Latin literature, including his edition of Virgil's works and his influential commentary on the Aeneid. His critical acumen extended to modern literature as well, and he wrote insightful essays on the works of Goethe, Schiller, and other contemporary German authors. Despite his numerous accomplishments, Lachmann's life was marked by personal tragedy. He lost his first wife and two of his children at a young age, and his second marriage was also unhappy. Nevertheless, he remained dedicated to his work and continued to produce groundbreaking scholarship until his death in 1851. This portrait, taken in the later years of Lachmann's life, captures the intensity and focus of a brilliant mind at work. With his piercing gaze and furrowed brow, Lachmann appears deeply engaged in the pursuit of knowledge, a testament to his enduring legacy as a pioneering scholar and critic.
