EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the annals of British royal history, as the Prince of Wales, later known as Edward VIII and eventually the Duke of Windsor, sets foot on Bermudian soil in 1931. Accompanied by F.G. Roundthwaite, the Superintendent of the Mid-Ocean Golf Club, and Mr. Frederick Hamilton, his assistant, the future king is seen in a more informal setting, dressed in a stylish suit and hat, as he makes his way from the dock to a waiting carriage. The Chief of Police, Hon. Bettington, is also present, adding an air of formality to the scene. The brothers, Edward and George, had embarked on a journey to South America, marking their first leg in the picturesque island of Bermuda. Edward's visit to Bermuda would prove to be a significant one, as he would later abdicate the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, and his brother George would ascend to the throne as King George VI. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the fashion, costumes, and historical context of the 1930s. The image is a testament to the enduring allure of royalty and the rich history of travel and diplomacy.
