Witchs cauldron and spider web, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Witchs cauldron and spider web, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Witch's Cauldron and Spider Web, c1950" by Shirley Markham transports us to a world of enchantment and mystery. The intricate details of the cauldron and spider web draw us in, evoking a sense of curiosity about what magical concoctions may have been brewed within. Shirley Markham, a talented artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London, showcases her unique style influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Mervyn Peake, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her artistic journey took her to the Dolomite Mountains in Italy where she sketched classical buildings in Rome. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programmes; societal expectations during that time led Markham to give up her profession after getting married in 1957. However, this did not diminish her talent or passion for art. For many years following her marriage, Markham's portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now. Today marks an exciting moment as we unveil these previously unseen works to the public for the first time. Let this mesmerizing image transport you into Shirley Markham's imaginative world where witches brew their potions amidst intricately spun spider webs. It serves as a reminder that even though circumstances may have limited one woman's artistic pursuits during that era; today we celebrate her talent and honor all women who defied societal norms to pursue their passions.
