EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, Convair F-106B-31-CO Delta Dart 57-2507, also known as NASA 607, is seen at NASA Lewis Research Center, Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio. This Delta Dart, manufactured in April 1958, was initially allocated to the Air Force Flight Test Centre at Edwards Air Force Base in California for upgrades, specifically for the Integrated Instrument Display (IID). However, during a taxi-test, the left main tire blew, causing a brake fire that resulted in significant damage. The aircraft veered off the runway and onto the lake bed. Despite the setback, 57-2507 was reassigned to NASA Lewis Research Center and redesignated as an NF-106B. It was used primarily for chase support for NASA 616 but also served as an ejection seat test aircraft, including the final qualification tests for the Gemini spacesuit and spacecraft escape system. Later, it was used for solar cell calibration tasks and air sample collection. In May 1981, the Delta Dart was transferred to NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia. There, the airframe was cut in half lengthwise for wind tunnel tests before being scrapped on February 24, 1984. This photograph captures a moment in time when this historic aircraft was still in use, contributing to the advancement of space exploration technology.
