EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an illustration from Acts and Monuments, a renowned historical work by John Foxe. Published in 1684, this lithograph depicts the vivid description of Windsor Castle during a significant event in history. The scene portrays the condemning and subsequent burning of Anthony Pierson, Marbecke, Testwood, and Filmer under the imposing walls of Windsor Castle on August 4th, 1543. These individuals were known as the Windsor Martyrs – courageous Protestant believers who faced persecution for their faith during the tumultuous era of religious strife in England. Robert Testwood, Anthony Pearson, and Henry Filmer were arrested by Dr. John London, an agent of Bishop Gardiner. Their accuser was William Simonds, a former Catholic Mayor of Windsor harboring personal grudges against them. The bravery and sacrifice displayed by these martyrs became immortalized within Foxe's Book of Martyrs - an enduring testament to their unwavering commitment to their beliefs amidst adversity. Notably captured in this image is Marbecke's salvation through King Henry VIII's pardon. As we gaze upon this historic artwork from The Stapleton Collection held privately today but once widely circulated across England centuries ago; it serves as a poignant reminder that even within the hallowed walls of majestic castles like Windsor lies stories etched with courage and resilience against oppression.
