The Prince of Wales planting a tree at the Kumasi Church College, Ghana, 1926
The Prince of Wales planting a tree at the Kumasi Church College, Ghana, 1926. On the death of his father, King George V, in January 1936, Prince Edward (1894-1972) was proclaimed King Edward VIII. Before long, rumours circulated about his alleged romance with an American, Mrs Wallis Warfield Simpson, then married to her second husband, a London shipping broker. On October 20, 1936, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin counselled Edward, as king and head of the Church of England, to remove all cause for the rumours. A week later Mrs. Simpson was granted a divorce, to become final in six months. In November the king confided to Baldwin that he intended to marry Mrs Simpson even if it meant his abdication. A morganatic marriage was proposed, but the cabinet was unwilling to accept this compromise. On December 11 1936, therefore, the king abdicated in favour of his brother, the duke of York, who became King George VI. Edward received the title duke of Windsor and married Mrs. Simpson in June 1937. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Prince of Wales planting a tree at the Kumasi Church College, Ghana, 1926. This historic photograph captures a significant moment in the life of Prince Edward (later known as King Edward VIII) during his visit to Ghana. The prince's presence at the college symbolized his commitment to education and community development. However, this image also foreshadows the tumultuous events that would unfold in Edward's life. Following the death of his father, King George V, in 1936, he ascended to the throne but faced controversy due to his relationship with American socialite Wallis Warfield Simpson. Rumors about their alleged romance swirled around London society until Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin advised Edward to address them promptly. In an unprecedented move for British royalty, Mrs. Simpson was granted a divorce from her second husband. Edward's determination to marry Mrs. Simpson led him down a path that ultimately resulted in his abdication on December 11th, 1936. His younger brother then became King George VI while Edward assumed the title Duke of Windsor. This photo serves as a reminder not only of Prince Edward's noble intentions during his visit to Ghana but also of how personal choices can shape history and alter destinies.
