St John Chrysostom, c1470-1523. Artist: Perugino
St John Chrysostom, c1470-1523. Born in Antioch, St John Chrysostom (c347-407), was reputedly one of the greatest of Christian preachers, for which he is known as the Golden Tongued. He was ordained Bishop of Constantinople in 398, but his concern for the poor and criticism of the excesses of the wealthy gained him enemies and in 403 a synod convened by Theophilus of Alexandria banished St John to Armenia. He died four years later en route to a more distant exile on the Black Sea. In 438 he was rehabilitated by the church and his body and relics were brought back to Constantinople

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the revered figure of St John Chrysostom, a prominent Christian preacher known as the Golden Tongued. Painted by Perugino in the late 15th or early 16th century, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of this influential saint. St John Chrysostom's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to serving others and his fearless criticism of societal injustices. Born in Antioch around 347 AD, he rose to become Bishop of Constantinople in 398 AD. However, his outspokenness against the excesses of the wealthy and his compassion for the poor resulted in banishment from Constantinople in 403 AD. In this portrait, St John is depicted with a strikingly expressive face adorned with a full beard that adds an air of wisdom and authority. His eyes convey both strength and gentleness, reflecting his deep commitment to spreading Christian teachings. The painting also includes symbolic elements such as a skull and cross, representing mortality and faith respectively. These symbols serve as reminders of St John's profound spirituality amidst worldly challenges. Perugino's masterful use of color brings vibrancy to this piece while highlighting its religious significance. The artist skillfully captures not only St John's physical likeness but also conveys his spiritual depth through subtle details. This remarkable print serves as a testament to St John Chrysostom's enduring legacy within Christianity and reminds us of the power that one individual can have in advocating for justice and compassion.
