EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of the Monongahela, fought on July 9, 1755, was a significant engagement in the early stages of the French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years' War. This historic battle took place at Braddocks Field, near present-day Braddock, Pennsylvania, approximately 10 miles east of Pittsburgh. The British force, led by General Edward Braddock, aimed to capture Fort Duquesne and secure control of the Ohio River Valley for the British. However, they were met with a well-prepared resistance from a French and Canadian force under the command of Captain Daniel Lienard de Beaujeu, along with their American Indian allies. The British army, which numbered around 1,400 men, was significantly larger than the French and Canadian force, but they were ultimately defeated. The Battle of the Monongahela marked a turning point in the war, demonstrating the effectiveness of the French and their allies in guerrilla warfare and the challenges of fighting in the unfamiliar terrain of the American wilderness. This evocative print captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with soldiers from both sides locked in fierce combat, and the smoke of gunpowder rising into the air.
