EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to Milton Keynes in January 1967, a significant time for this town as it was officially designated as a new city. The ambitious design brief aimed to create a city on an impressive scale. Located approximately 45 miles northwest of London, Milton Keynes became the administrative center of the Borough of Milton Keynes. Covering an expansive area of 89 square kilometers (34 square miles), the newly formed city incorporated existing towns such as Bletchley, Wolverton, and Stony Stratford. Additionally, fifteen villages and farmland were included in its boundaries. Interestingly enough, the name "Milton Keynes" was derived from the pre-existing village situated just east of the planned center. The image itself captures a serene countryside scene on January 19th, 1967 - just days before this historic designation took place. A picturesque barn stands proudly amidst vast fields filled with hay bales while a charming lane winds through this rural landscape. A road sign reminds passersby that they are entering Milton Keynes - a town destined for greatness. Preserved by Mirrorpix and now available through Memory Lane Prints, this print offers us a glimpse into the early days of what would become one of England's most renowned cities. It serves as both a testament to its humble beginnings and an inspiration for future urban development endeavors across the globe.
