ISS astronaut
International Space Station astronaut. Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria working on the International Space Station (ISS). Some of the solar arrays on the ISS are seen over the Earth behind him. This was during Space Shuttle mission STS-92 (11th-24th October 2000), which added new modules to the ISS. The ISS is a collaboration between NASA, ESA, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan and Brazil. When complete, it will be over four times larger than Mir, the Russian space station, and over 100 metres in length. It will orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometres. It is hoped to be completed in 2004

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see ISS astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria diligently working on the International Space Station (ISS) during the STS-92 mission. As he floats effortlessly in space, a breathtaking view of Earth serves as a stunning backdrop, with some of the ISS's impressive solar arrays visible behind him. The image captures a pivotal moment in history as it showcases the collaborative efforts between NASA, ESA, the Russian space agency, Canada, Japan, and Brazil to construct this remarkable feat of engineering. With new modules being added during this mission in October 2000, the ISS was steadily growing into an awe-inspiring structure that would eventually surpass Mir – Russia's previous space station – both in size and length. Once completed in 2004, the ISS will orbit at an altitude of 400 kilometers above our planet's surface. It represents humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and exploration beyond our home planet. This photograph not only highlights Astronaut Lopez-Alegria's crucial role but also symbolizes mankind's collective ambition to push boundaries and venture further into outer space. This extraordinary snapshot is a testament to human ingenuity and serves as a reminder of our capacity for collaboration on such grand scales. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this iconic moment from one of humankind’s greatest achievements: constructing an international outpost among the stars.
