5921034 Regimental Colour, British Swiss Legion, 1855-1856 (fabric) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: British Swiss Legion Flag, 1855-1856.
This flag is the Regimental Colour of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Light Infantry of the British Swiss Legion. The British Swiss Legion was one of many troops which were raised following the Foreign Enlistment Act of December 1854. This Act authorised the raising of troops abroad to address the problem of the shortage of men in the British Army.
The 1st Regiment of Light Infantry (of two battalions) was formed in August 1855 and was sent to the East in November 1855. Realising that it would be impossible to hut them in the Crimea, they wintered in Turkey at Smyrna (Izmir), where they remained until peace was declared in April 1856. The entire Swiss Legion, which numbered 3, 150 officers and men, was then disbanded.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Regimental Colour of the 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Light Infantry from the British Swiss Legion. Created by the British School in the 19th century, this fabric flag is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The British Swiss Legion Flag was raised during a time when there was a shortage of men in the British Army, following the implementation of the Foreign Enlistment Act in December 1854. This act allowed for troops to be raised abroad to address this issue. Formed in August 1855, the 1st Regiment of Light Infantry consisted of two battalions and was sent to Eastern Europe in November that same year. However, due to logistical challenges, they were unable to reach Crimea and instead spent their winter months in Smyrna (Izmir), Turkey. Peace was eventually declared in April 1856, leading to the disbandment of all members within the Swiss Legion which totaled around 3,150 officers and men. This historic photograph captures not only a significant artifact but also represents an important chapter within military history. The intricate details on this fabric flag serve as a reminder of bravery and sacrifice made by soldiers who fought under its colors during tumultuous times.
