EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases King James IV of Scotland, a prominent figure in Scottish history. The image portrays the king mounted on a majestic horse, exuding power and authority. His attire is meticulously detailed, with a black cap atop his head and a pink tunic adorned with armor. Blue stockings and boots complete his regal ensemble. In one hand, King James IV holds a bow and arrow, symbolizing his prowess as an archer. A quiver filled with arrows rests by his side, ready for action. In the other hand, he firmly grasps a sword, signifying both his military might and determination to protect his kingdom. The artist behind this masterpiece is Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard, known for his exceptional talent in book illustration and interior design. Through vibrant hand coloring techniques employed by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard himself along with lithographers A. Didier, L. Flameng, F. Laguillermie; this artwork comes to life. Published in 1867 as part of "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th-18th centuries), this work was curated by Georges Duplessis - esteemed curator at the Bibliotheque nationale - who continued the legacy started by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri in their earlier series on costumes from the 12th-15th centuries. This remarkable print captures not only King James IV's physical appearance but also provides insight into the fashion trends prevalent during that era while immortalizing an influential monarch whose reign left an indelible mark on Scottish history.
