EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving by Pietro Santi Bartoli depicts the punishments of three infamous figures from Greek mythology: Sisyphus, Ixion, and Tantalus. The scene is taken from "Illustrierte Mythologie" a comprehensive collection of myths and legends published in 1867. In this haunting image, we witness the eternal torment endured by these doomed souls. In the foreground stands Sisyphus, condemned to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to perpetually roll back down before reaching the summit. His face reflects both exhaustion and despair as he grapples with his never-ending task. To his right is Ixion, tied to a burning wheel that relentlessly spins through flames. This punishment was inflicted upon him for attempting to seduce Zeus's wife, Hera. The agony etched on Ixion's face serves as a chilling reminder of divine retribution. Lastly, we see Tantalus submerged in water up to his chin but forever denied relief from thirst or hunger as fruits dangle just out of reach above him. This agonizing predicament was his penalty for betraying the gods' trust by serving them human flesh at a banquet. Bartoli's intricate detailing brings these ancient tales vividly to life while capturing the essence of their suffering. Through this engraving, viewers are transported into the realm of mythological punishment and reminded of the consequences that await those who defy divine authority.
