EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the history of France, showcasing the legendary figure known as Le Grand Ferre or Ferret. Born around 1330 and living until 1358, this heroic peasant possessed incredible strength that earned him great respect among his fellow countrymen. However, tragedy struck when Le Grand Ferre contracted pneumonia after bathing in cold water. Seeking solace and rest in his humble cottage located in Rivecourt, he unknowingly became the target of English invaders who believed they could easily overpower him while he slept. But to their astonishment, as soon as the English arrived at his doorstep, Le Grand Ferre swiftly armed himself with an axe and fearlessly fought off his enemies. With unmatched bravery and determination, he single-handedly defeated them while others fled for their lives. After vanquishing his foes, Le Grand Ferre returned to bed but sadly succumbed to his illness shortly afterward. His valiant last stand against the English invaders forever immortalized him as a symbol of courage and resilience within French history. This remarkable image is part of "Histoire de France learned by image and direct observation: Preparatory Course and First Year of Elements Course" published in 1923. Illustrated by Ferdinand Raffin, it serves as a visual testament to the indomitable spirit embodied by Le Grand Ferre during one fateful chapter in France's storied past.
